Yesterday marked the twentieth anniversary of iconic singer, FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI’s death.
On August 2, 1997, the world was shocked by the news that one of Africa’s most recognised figures had passed away due to complications from AIDS.
The musical genius cum social activist had been a cultural icon since the early 70’s when he created the Afrobeat genre and popularised its global acceptance.
During his lifetime, FELA was reportedly arrested close to 200 times as he represented a thorn in the flesh of successive governments in Nigeria. He was 58-year-old.
