June 26, 2024 FG Bans Single-Use Plastics in Ministries and Other Sectors

The Federal Government announced on Tuesday a ban on single-use plastics in ministries, departments, and agencies. The Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, made this declaration while addressing reporters at the Presidential Villa following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.

Salako referred to the National Policy on Plastic Waste Management, adopted in 2020, which anticipates banning certain categories of plastics by January 2025. "These include single-use items like plastic spoons, straws, PET bottles, and water sachets. The Federal Government is leading by example and preparing Nigerians for this transition," he said.

The minister emphasized that the ban is part of the government's commitment to addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and plastic pollution, which pose significant challenges in Nigeria. He noted that plastic waste often clogs drains, contributing to flooding, pollutes oceans, and adversely affects human health and the environment.

Earlier this year, the Lagos State Government also banned single-use plastics and Styrofoam within the state.
