Andrew Essien, a deputy comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), passed away on Tuesday after collapsing during a questioning session with the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts. Essien, who oversaw revenue in the NCS's Account Unit, was addressing queries about customs revenue when he began to cough and requested water. Struggling to open a water bottle, he collapsed before assistance arrived. He was rushed to the National Assembly Clinic, where he was pronounced dead.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), chaired by Bamidele Salam (PDP, Osun), was conducting its routine investigation into the NCS's activities when the incident occurred. The NCS, through its spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada, expressed deep sadness over Essien's death. The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, praised Essien's exemplary service and dedication, stating that his contributions would be remembered and cherished by the entire NCS community.

Born on November 16, 1967, Essien joined the Nigeria Customs Service on November 27, 1989.
