September 21, 2022 South Africa To Bid For 2027 Women’s World Cup

South Africa To Bid For 2027 Women’s World Cup

South Africa will bid to stage the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, hoping to bring the event to Africa for the first time.

South Africa was the first – and so far only – country on the continent to host the men’s World Cup, in 2010.

In July, South Africa became African champions for the first time after beating hosts Morocco in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat.

Almost two years ago Netherlands, Belgium and Germany launched a joint bid for the 2027 competition, and that will be among the South African proposal’s principle rivals.

A joint Scandinavian bid has also been floated, but with Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden bidding together to host the 2025 European Championship, the continental tournament could take precedence.

Meanwhile, the United States has also indicated a desire to bid for either the 2027 or 2031 World Cups.

Next year’s tournament in Australia and New Zealand will be the first finals with 32 teams, an increase of eight teams from France 2019.

It will also leave Africa and South America as the only populated continents never to have staged the Women’s World Cup.

SAFA had been in the running for the 2023 World Cup but pulled out, claiming it wanted to focus on developing the women’s national league.

South Africa’s women’s side, Banyana Banyana, went out in the group stage on their first appearance at the World Cup in 2019.

World Athletics Ratifies Amusan’s World Record

The 12.12secs record set by Tobi Amusan in the semifinal of women’s 100m hurdles at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon, United States, on July 24, has been ratified as a world record by the World Athletics (WA).

In a statement issued by the world athletics body, Amusan’s feat has now been officially recognized as a world record.

After clocking an African record of 12.40secs in the 100m hurdles heats, the world was put on notice that 25-year-old Amusan was capable of something special.

The next day, she ran 12.12 (0.9m/s) in the semi-finals to improve the world record of 12.20 that had been set by USA’s Kendra Harrison in London in 2016. Amusan was not done there, though, and she followed that remarkable performance with a wind-assisted 12.06 (2.5m/s) to win the final.

“The goal was to come out and to win this gold,” she said. “Honestly, I believe in my abilities, but I was not expecting a world record at these championships,” the Commonwealth Games champion said.

With this development, Amusan now holds the world record as the best female hurdler in the world.

Ukraine: Russia Banned From Euro 2024

Russia will not be included in the qualifying draw for Euro 2024, UEFA and the country's football federation said on Tuesday.

Following the invasion of Ukraine, UEFA banned the Russian national team and Russian clubs from international events earlier this year.

All Russian teams are currently suspended following the decision of the UEFA Executive Committee of February 28, 2022, which has further been confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on July 15, 2022,” European football’s governing body said in a statement.

“Russia is therefore not included in the UEFA European Football Championship 2022-24 qualifying draw.”

In July, CAS dismissed Russia's appeal against the ban.

“The Union is currently awaiting for the full text of the CAS decision, following the study of which a decision will be made on further steps,” the Russian Football Union said.

FIFA has also barred Russia from competing in the 2017 World Cup in Qatar.

Originally, the squad had qualified for the European qualification play-offs.

The Russian women's team was likewise eliminated from this year's Euro in England, with Portugal taking their place.

Germany will host the 2024 European Championship, with the qualification draw scheduled for October 9 in Frankfurt.

Germany's interior minister has also requested that Belarus be barred from participating in the competition owing to the country's support for Russia.

September 20, 2022 MLS launches investigation after DC United forward Taxi Fountas accused of using racial slur

MLS launches investigation after DC United forward Taxi Fountas accused of using racial slur

Major League Soccer (MLS) has launched an investigation following allegations of racism during
Sunday’s encounter between DC United and Inter Miami.

United forward Taxi Fountas was accused of directing a racial slur towards Inter defender
Damion Lowe.

The 27-year-old has denied using the “despicable” word and is “saddened to be falsely accused”.

“I did not use the word I am being accused of using,” Fountas posted on social media.

“That despicable racial slur is one I denounce and did not use. We had a hot discussion on the
field, but I have not racially abused anyone. I firmly reject racism in any form, it is despicable.

“I have many friends from many cultures. I always respect the culture, religion and skin colour of
each person. I am therefore very upset by this accusation and saddened to be falsely accused.”

Post-match, Inter manager Phil Neville said: “There was a racist comment that was
unacceptable.

“A word was used that I think is unacceptable in society. I think it’s the worst word in the world.”

Neville, who along with his DC United counterpart Wayne Rooney were asked to talk to referee
Ismail Elfath after the altercation, added: “There is no place at all for racism on a football field or
society.”

A statement released by Rooney’s club read: “DC United are aware of an allegation involving a
player during the match against Inter Miami.

“The club will work closely with Major League Soccer and Inter Miami to investigate the incident.”

With play paused, Neville entered into discussions regarding whether his players should leave
the field following the clash between Greek international Fountas and Jamaica’s Lowe at Audi
Field in Washington.

On resumption, Fountas, who scored shortly before the incident to make it 2-2, was substituted
almost immediately by DC boss Rooney.

Praising the handling of the incident, Neville added: “I must commend my players for keeping
their calm and I must commend the referee. [In] a really difficult situation he followed the
protocols set out by the MLS.

“I must [also] give massive, massive respect to Wayne Rooney for dealing with it in the way that
he did.

“I have always known him as a class act and today he went up in my estimation more than he has
ever done, more than any goal he has ever scored.”

Referee Elfath has said that neither he nor any of the on-field officials heard a racial slur being
used, while the incident was also checked by VAR.

In a statement, the MLS said “MLS has zero tolerance for abusive and offensive language.
“We take these allegations very seriously. An investigation into this matter will begin promptly.”
Miami won the game 3-2 thanks to a late goal from Gonzalo Higuain
