April 15, 2024 Again, Nigeria’s Electricity Grid Collapses

Once again, Nigeria faced a setback in its electricity supply as the national grid experienced a collapse on Monday, plunging several cities into darkness. The grid failure occurred at approximately 2:42 a.m., leading to a significant drop in power generation to 64.70 megawatts.

Jos Electricity Distribution Company (Jos DisCo) confirmed the incident, attributing the loss of power to the national grid's failure in the early hours of Monday. In a statement by Friday Elijah, the Head of Corporate Communications at Jos DisCo, the company acknowledged the outage and assured customers of efforts to restore normal power supply once the grid stabilizes.

This recent collapse comes shortly after a similar incident in March, highlighting the ongoing challenges within Nigeria's power sector. Issues such as regulatory uncertainty, gas supply constraints, transmission system limitations, and inadequate planning continue to plague the sector despite the government's privatization efforts in 2013, which aimed to enhance efficiency.

Since privatization, the national grid has experienced over 140 collapses, reflecting the persistent difficulties faced in maintaining a reliable electricity supply. Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), indicated that updates on the situation would be provided to the public in due course.
