Today marks 24th anniversary of June 12

Today marks the 24th anniversary of June 12, 1993 Presidential election believed to have been won by late Chief MKO ABIOLA.

The election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in the nation’s history was however annulled by the former military President, General IBRAHIM BABANGIDA.

It was also the first election held in the country after the 1983 military coup and the result was a victory for the late Chief MKO ABIOLA of the Social Democratic Party against Alhaji BASHIR TOFA of the National Republican Convention.

Speaking ahead of the anniversary, one of the son’s of late MKO ABIOLA, ABDULMUMIN said it was sad that 24 years after the election and 19 years after his father’s death, the country is yet to record meaningful democratic gains.
