Less than two weeks to the expiration of the three months tenure of WALTER ONNOGHEN as acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, there is growing disquiet over the failure of President BUHARI to forward his name to the Senate for confirmation as substantive head of the nation’s judiciary.
The National Judicial Council had on October 6, 2016 recommended WALTER ONNOGHEN to President BUHARI as successor to MAHMUD MOHAMMED whose tenure expired on November 9, 2016.
While reacting today on the issue, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, JIBRIN OKUTEPA said what the President has done has no place in the nation’s constitution adding it is first time the Chief Justice of Nigeria will be appointed in acting capacity.
He said the development is a threat to the stability of the judiciary.
According to OKUTEPA, Justice WALTER ONNOGHEN has fulfilled all criteria to be appointed having being certified by the National Judicial Council and recommended to the President.
