FG considers shutting down International Airport, Abuja.

Reports reaching us say that The Federal Government is considering shutting down the NNAMDI AZIKIWE International Airport Abuja in February in order to relay the runway.

Our correspondent gathered that the maintenance has become necessary following threats by some international airlines to stop landing in Abuja due to heavy damage the runway has suffered over the years.

The stretch of runaway that is currently in use at the airport has fallen just short of the International Civil Aviation Organisation ICAO regulations and doesn’t give sufficient room for manoeuvre in case of any emergency and this has caused the international airline operators to worry about safety.

According to experts, the option available is to undertake a two-week maintenance work on the damaged parts of the runway, which is projected to give the runway an extended lifespan of two years.

While the airport is closed, the Kaduna International Airport is being suggested as an alternative, but there are concerns among frequent travellers and the expatriate community regarding the security situation on the Abuja-Kaduna road.

There is yet no official confirmation from the FG regarding the dates of the closure of the airport.
