La Liga ; Barca and Atleti thrash opponents in big wins

Barcelona made it 12 goals in 4 days as they defeated newly promoted side Leganes 5-1 on Saturday.

Lionel Messi scored a brace, with Luis Suarez, Neymar and Rafinha also on the scoresheet, as Luis Enrique’s side carried their free-scoring run from the Champions League into La Liga as they also thrashed Celtic 7-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Messi opened the scoring in the 15th minute before setting up Suarez for a second, and the match was effectively over as a contest when Neymar struck just before the break.

Messi’s penalty made it 4-0 on 55 minutes before Rafinha produced the goal of the game with a curling effort from outside the box.

Leganes pulled back a late consolation, the first ever top flight goal at their Butarque stadium, through Gabriel Appelt Pires’ free kick

Atletico Madrid eased to a 5-0 victory over Sporting Gijon.

Antoine Griezmann scored twice in the first half either side of a Kevin Gameiro goal, with Fernando Torres’ late brace sealing an emphatic victory for the Madrid side who have been surrounded by news of their manager’s departure after his contract was revised with the club.

Barcelona now lead the La Liga table until Real Madrid play against Espanyol on Sunday evening.
