The Football Association of Zambia have sacked George Lwandamina and confirmed the appointment of assistant manager Wedson Nyirenda as the new head coach of the Chipolopolo ahead of their Russia 2018 World Cup qualifying fixture against Nigeria.
Lwandamina was sacked following the failure of the Chipolopolo to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Gabon in a group that also had Guinea Bissau, Kenya and Congo.
Nyirenda, who was employed as an assistant coach by the Zambian FA in July was the former coach of Zambian Football League side Zanaco Football Club, he also coached Mozambican side Feroviaro de Beira and Green Buffaloes of Zambia.
He beat South African coach Gordon Igesund who was earlier touted as the favourite to the job.
His first game in charge of the Chipolopolo will be against the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Ocotber 9th in Ndola.
