INEC meets in Benin city to deliberate the request by the department of state security service for the postponement of governorship election in Edo state.

We begin this lunchtime from Benin City where the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC is currently meeting to deliberate the request by the Department of State Security DSS and the Police for the postponement of this Saturday’s governorship election in Edo state.

The request stunned the Electoral Commission and forced the Chairman, Professor YAKOUB MAHMOUD to summon a meeting of the National Commissioners.

ROTIMI OYEKANMI, Chief Press Secretary to Professor YAKOUB suggested that INEC would have to consider the request of the security agencies.

At a news briefing in Abuja yesterday, the Police and the DSS requested for a postponement citing planned attacks by extremists with Edo state being one of the targets.

Latest reports have it that due to the security advice, INEC would be left with no choice but to postpone the exercise.

According to reports, the INEC Chairman had tried unsuccessfully to get further briefings on the situation from the Police or the DSS.

Also, the commission which had planned the commencement of distribution of some sensitive and non-sensitive election materials from today has now called it off because the Police has stopped providing security assistance to its officials.
