World number five, Rafael Nadal crashed out of the US Open after a 6-1 2-6 6-4 3-6 7-6 loss to France’s Lucas Pouille on Sunday night.
The 22-year-old recovered from a break down in the fifth before converting his fourth match point in the tie-break to claim the biggest win of his career.
The defeat means that 2016 is the first year since 2004 in which the 30-year-old Nadal has failed to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final.
Next up for Pouille is a quarter final tie against compatriot, Gael Monfils, who took out Cypriot, Marcus Baghdatis in straight sets.
It has been a good tournament for Frenchmen, as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga made it a hat-trick of Frenchmen into the quarters with a four-set victory over American, Jack Sock.
The ninth seed will play world number one, Novak Djokovic, who outclassed Britain’s Kyle Edmund in the late match on Sunday.
