Rio 2016 Paralympics: Russia’s appeal rejected by Swiss court

Russia has failed in its final attempt to reverse the ban on its athletes from next month’s Rio Paralympics.

The Swiss Supreme Court dismissed the Russian Paralympic Committee’s ppeal to overturn the ban.

Russia were banned from competing by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) after allegations of state-sponsored doping.

After a failed appeal at the Court of Arbitation for Sport, the Swiss court appeal had been Russia’s last hope.

The tribunal – the only body which could overrule Cas – said the RPC had not shown it had “fulfilled its obligations to anti-doping rules”.

It also ruled that the cases of individual athletes could not be dealt with separately.

More than 100 Russian athletes wrote to the Switzerland-based International Paralympic Committee asking it to overturn the ban before the Games, which begin on September 7th.
