UEFA Champions League: ManCity progress, Ajax dumped out

Four-time European champions Ajax missed out on a place in the Champions League group stage after losing 4-1 to Rostov.

Russian side Rostov won 5-2 on aggregate to reach the group stage for the first time in their history as it is now the second consecutive season that Ajax have failed to reach the group stage – they were knocked out by Rapid Vienna a year ago.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City took a 1-0 win over Steau Bucharest at the Etihad with troubled Joe Hart in goal.

Borussia Monchengladbach beat Young Boys Bern 6-1 for a 9-2 aggregate win.

Thorgan Hazard, brother of Chelsea forward Eden, and Raffael both scored hat-tricks for the German side against the Swiss team.
