Kerber falls short in Number One bid

Australian Open champion, Angelique Kerber failed in her bid to overtake Serena Williams on top of the WTA rankings following a 6-3 6-1 loss to Karolina Pliskova in the final of Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Germany’s Kerber would have risen to number one in the world with victory in Cincinnati, but the 28-year-old was comprehensively beaten by the big-serving Pliskova on Sunday evening.

Serena Williams had intended to defend her Cincinnati title after accepting a wildcard into the tournament, but she was forced to pull out with a shoulder injury- putting her 183-week reign as world number one at risk.

The American however keeps her spot as the top woman in the sport, edging ever closer to Steffi’s Graf’s record of 186 consecutive weeks on top of the rankings.
