National Under-23 Players Protest over Unpaid Allowances

Nigeria’s preparations for the men’s football quarter final against Denmark at the Rio Olympics is in turmoil after the players refused to train on Thursday because of unpaid bonuses and allowances.

Coach of the team, Samson Siasia said it is unfair and disrespectful that the players have been paid just eleven days’ camp allowance, while their preparations for, and participation in Rio 2016 has spanned almost four months.

Siasia was unimpressed with the Nigeria Football Federation’s hiring of a foreign coach for the Super Eagles, given that he and his coaching staff have not been paid for five months.

The coach said he backs his players in their fight for their entitlements, but he has also appealed to them to get on with the tournament.
