Nigeria’s national under-23 team suffered a 2-0 loss to Colombia in their final group match at the Rio Olympics.
Heading into the match, Nigeria had already secured top spot in the group, and coach Samson Siasia made several changes to keep his players fresh for the quarter finals.
Goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi stepped in for Emmanuel Daniel, while full backs, Ndifreke Effiong and Kingsley Madu made their first starts of the tournament.
Sadiq Popoola came in for Usman Mohammed, and Umar Aminu started in place of Imoh Ezekiel.
Teofilo Gutierrez opened the scoring four minutes into the match, while Dorlan Parbon doubled the South Americans’ lead in the 63rd minute to put some daylight between the sides.
The victory was good enough to take Colombia to a second round meeting with hosts Brazil, while Nigeria will take on Denmark on Saturday night.
