Funke Oshonaike and Edem Offiong have both crashed out of the Table Tennis event in the Women’s Singles after losing in both their respective Round One games at the Rio Olympics.
Nigeria Olympic veteran, Oshonaike, got off to a winning start at Rio 2016 after she defeated Mariana Shakian four sets to three in the preliminary round in day One in the table tennis event. She lost the first set 8-11 but bounced back to take the next three sets 11-9, 11-7 and 11-8. Sahakian rallied back to win the next two sets 8-11 and 9-11 before finally winning the last set 11-8.
But in the first round against Puerto Rico’s Diaz Adriana, Oshonaike lost 4 -2 as her opponent picked the last three sets 11-7, 11-5, 11-2 to leave the Nigerian regretting her ouster.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s other representative in the women’s event, Edem Offiong also lost out to Pavlovich Viktoria of Belarus after taking the first 11-5, but her opponent rallied back to win the next four sets to send the Offiong out of the competition.
Offiong earlier won in the preliminary round after thrashing Sally Yee of Fiji 4-0 to also move into Round One.
Nigeria still has representation in the Men’s Singles with Segun Toriola and Haruna Quadri in action.
