Rio 2016: Russian Boxers Cleared to Compete

The International Boxing Association says all 11 Russian boxers who qualified for the Rio Olympics can go ahead and compete at the Games- after being cleared by the International Olympic Committee, IOC.

There had been calls for the Olympic governing body to impose a blanket ban on Russia following revelations of widespread state-sponsored doping, but the IOC asked individual federations to decide whether or not Russians could compete in Rio.

The IOC announced on Saturday that its panel, consisting of Ugur Erdener, the IOC’s medical commission chairman, Germany’s Claudia Bokel and fellow IOC member Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., would review the decisions by the individual sports federations over the eligibility of Russian athletes.

That panel has now ratified the decision of the International Boxing Association.
