Coach of Nigeria’s national basketball team William Voight has named a 12-man roster for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
The team is headlined by forward Ike Diogu, with Ekene Ibekwe and Andy Ogide as the other forwards.
2015 FIBA Afrobasket Player of the Tournament Chamberlain “Champ” Oguchi is joined by Detroit Pistons rookie Michael Gbinijie, Ben Uzoh, Michael Umeh, Stanley Okoye and Josh Akognon as the guards.
The centres are Olaseni “Shane” Lawal, Alade Aminu and Ebi Ere.
The notable absentee is Portland Trailblazers forward Al-farouq Aminu who has pulled out of the team “due to continued and unresolved organisational challenges with the Nigerian Basketball Federation.”
The dispute is said to be related to an insurance policy which requires national basketball federations to pay an insurance fee for NBA players as cover for injuries during national engagements.
Trailblazers forward Festus Ezeli is said to have also withdrawn from selection consideration because of the same insurance policy.
D’Tigers are grouped alongside Argentina, Spain, Brazil, Lithuania and Croatia in Group B of the men’s basketball event of the Olympics and will play their first game with Argentina on Sunday August 7.
