Nigeria have crashed out of this year’s African Nations Championship in Rwanda after losing 1-0 to Guinea in one of the final Group C matches today.
The Super Eagles needed just a draw to progress to the quarter-finals but were handed a significant blow after conceding on the stroke of halftime, a 45th minute goal by 19-year-old midfielder Ibrahima Sankhon.
With time running out, Nigeria brought on tournament leading goal scorer Chisom Chikatara as well as Bright Onyedikachi and Bature Yaro but the team could only muster two shots on target against the Guineans.
Tunisia thrashed Niger 5-0 to top Group C with five points, while Guinea, also on five points, finished as runners-up as Nigeria finished third on four points and Niger finished bottom with a solitary point.
It was the home-based Eagles first loss under coach Sunday Oliseh and fifth loss for Nigeria in 17 meetings with Guinea.
