Real Madrid suffered a blow to their title hopes when they were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Real Betis. The Spanish giants had been expected to make it three wins out of three under new boss, Zinedine Zidane, but they were frustrated by a plucky performance by their hosts.
Betis had not scored a single goal in their previous seven games, but they needed only seven minutes to end that drought when Alvaro Cejudo volleyed in a stunning opener from 18 yards.
Madrid dominated the match from that point, but Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Pepe wasted a number of clear-cut opportunities, while the visitors were also frustrated by a string of superb saves by Betis keeper, Antonio Adan.
Real eventually got on level terms through Benzema, who tucked home after being set up by James Rodriguez.
It wasn’t the best of weekends for the Madrid clubs, as Real’s local rivals, Atletico could not find a way past visiting Sevilla in a goaless draw at the Vicente Calderon.
Atletico Madrid are level on points with Barcelona, while Real are four points off the pace. Barca have played a match less than both their title rivals.
