Real Madrid forward, Gareth Bale faces a race against time to be fit for the club’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie against AS Roma after being diagnosed with a calf injury.
Bale picked up the injury during Sunday’s 5-1 home victory over Sporting Gijon, with the Welshman forced off the field by the problem just before half-time.
The 26-year-old has missed eight games over two separate spells this season because of calf injuries.
Bale is expected to be out for three weeks, with reports in Spain suggesting Real hope to have him back for the Champions League tie against Roma on February 17.
When he has been fit, the world’s most expensive footballer has been in fine form for Real this season, scoring 13 league goals, including five in his last three appearances.
