Rwanda got off their campaign as hosts to a winning start courtesy of a 1-0 win over West African giants Cote d’Ivoire, in the CHAN opener on Saturday in Kigali
Defender Emery Bayisenge was the hero for the Amavubi with his well-taken free-kick on the quarter-hour mark, separating the two sides.
It was the perfect start the host nation needed to get the packed crowd at the national stadium which included President Paul Kagame on their feet.
The Rwandans had a good opportunity to double their lead on the hour mark from the penalty spot after Bayisenge was fouled by Ivorien defender, Koffo Boua but the Man-of-the-Match was denied by Les Elephants goalkeeper Ali Badra Sangare, who made a comfortable save.
Nonetheless, the hosts didn’t have it go all their was they survived a late scare after Guiza’s volley bounced off the crossbar.
Rwanda tops Group A and will now face Gabon on Wednesday, 20th of January at 3pm
