Super Eagles and Abia Warriors defender, Austin Obaroakpo has been suspended for Monday’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) game against Niger Republic.
Team coordinator, Patrick Pascal, confirmed that the team’s assistant captain will miss the Super Eagles opening game due to accumulation of cards during the CHAN qualifiers.
Nigeria knocked out Burkina Faso during the qualifiers over two legs, and Obaroakpo got booked twice in both fixtures.
“He will miss the first game on Monday due to suspension, but we don’t need to panic. Although, he’s a top player and important figure in the team.
“I think the good thing about this team is that we have quality players in the squad. Every player are equal to the task. I’m confident it won’t affect the team,” Pascal said.
Obaroakpo and Jamiu Alimi of Shooting Stars had formed a rhythm and blend in the heart of the Super Eagles defence since the qualifiers and test games.
Lobi Stars Samson Gbadebo and Sunshine Stars defender, Stephen Eze are in contention to replace the suspended Obaroakpo.
