Nigeria’s national Under-23 team, Dream Team 6, defeated hosts Senegal 1-0 in the first semi-final of the Africa Under-23 Cup of Nations to qualify for the football event of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Etebo Oghenekaro notched his third goal of the competition with a 72nd minute penalty.
Senegal dominated the first half and created opportunities to score, but were repeatedly denied by the Dream Team’s goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel who was in superb form.
Daniel saved Ibrahima Keita’s penalty – albeit a weak effort – just before the break.
Coach of the Dream Team, Samson Siasia singled out goalkeeper Daniel for commendation after the game.
Siasia said, “Emmanuel Daniel kept us in the match as he made some brilliant saves today. On another day, we could have been embarrassed.”
With this result, Nigeria will face Algeria in Saturday’s final. Algeria defeated South Africa 2-0 in the second semi-final and have also secured passage to the Rio Olympics.
The third-place playoff will see hosts Senegal battle South Africa for the final ticket to the Olympics.
